GENERAL RULES

The event is organized around National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) rules and best practices. Mah Jongg Made Easy and www.mahjlife.com/wiki will be used to confirm and clarify the rules and best practices as needed. If there are questions about rules or best practices, the instructor on site has the final say.

If you sign up for Open Play, it's understood that you know enough to play a full game of Mah Jongg without assistance. If you cannot, you may be asked to sit out.

MahJonggdotClub makes an effort to sit players with like abilities together. However, you may be seated at a table with players that are at a different level of proficiency than yourself. Please be patient and kind. If this is problematic for you, please see the event organizer.

Play starts at the start time of the event.

Table (House) Rules must be agreed on by the table. For example, if there are three players and your table wants to include a Charleston (NJML eliminates it for less than four players), the process must be agreed up before the game starts.

ENVIRONMENT

Please set cell phones to vibrate and keep them OFF the table.

No pets.

Please keep fragrance to a minimum to keep the environment enjoyable for everyone.

No shufflers on the tiles provided. If you want to bring your own tiles and shufflers to use with them, that is fine. You will also need to bring a tile map.

No food or drinks are allowed on the table with tiles or mats.

Please bring washed hands to the table or use the wipes provided.

Reserve conversational talking for outside of active game play.

SPORTSMANSHIP | GAME RULES

All players are expected to display fairness, accountability, integrity and respect. A good reference for those are here.

At the start of play, each player rolls the dice, the highest number determines East.

Each person takes their own tiles during the "deal".

Do not look at your tiles until everyone has ALL their tiles.

During the game, avoid commenting on a player's hand, play, or strategy, unless it is to declare a hand dead AND explain why.

Never touch another player’s rack. For a Joker exchange, request or offer tiles, then pass them above the table.

The only tile that cannot be passed during the Charleston is a Joker. If it is, it must be returned. Politely say, "I don't think you meant to pass this to me."

Practice proper tile racking; tapping has no meaning.

Congratulate the winner and refrain from dissecting your "almost" hand.
